Priory of Valmogne

BAUDINARD-SUR-VERDON

The old priory of Valmogne is located in the north-west of the village, it can be reached by the road to Vaumougne.

It was probably at the end of the 5th century that the Abbey of Valmogne was built, on a previously occupied site, where Gallo-Roman burials can be found.
In 990, the bishop of Riez donated the abbey to the monks of Lérins. In 1256, following an exchange with the abbey of Lérins, Valmogne is attached to the monastery of Saint Catherine de Sorps (Fontaine-L'Evêque) founded in 1255, in the valley of Bauduen, the only female monastery of the Verdon in the Middle Ages.
In the 15th century, the monks left Valmogne.
The priory was burned down and largely degraded during the revolution, then sold as a national asset, it became an agricultural building and was left abandoned.
Restored in the 1970s, Valmogne is now listed in the inventory annexed to the Historical Monuments.
A superb Romanesque priory, it originally adopted an early-Christian basilica plan: a large central vessel overlooking a cul-de-four vaulted apse.
