BAUDINARD-SUR-VERDON

The name Baudinard appeared around 1050 in the form of a proper name, Gonzoleno Bellidisnarii. The castrum of Baudinard is first mentioned around 1103, at the same time as the parish church of Saint-Jacques.

In a deed, the Bishop of Riez gave the vacant church of the castrum of Baudinard to the Lérinian priory of Valmogne.
The bossed tower or keep, the only really visible remnant of the castle along with a few sections of the surrounding walls, measures 9.6 x 9 metres at its base and is at least 4 metres high.
The walls, which are 2.26 metres thick at the base and 1.70 metres thick at the top, are battered and made of stone with discontinuous bosses. The doorway has a pointed arch.
This tower must have been built using limestone that may have come from the village quarries (Arbitelle and Saint-Jean).
Within the military function, the lookout function is the most obvious, but it is not the only or the most important one. The late construction of the tower (late 13th - early 14th century) gave great importance to its symbolic function, affirming the existence of a power seeking to assert its rights and demand justice.
In 1156, Guillaume de Baudinard, a Hospitaller, appeared as a witness in a deed of gift. He may have been a member of the de Blacas family, who were lords of Baudinard from 1195 to 1389. It was in 1195 that Raymond, Lord of Baudinard, son of Blacas, brother of Blacasset and father of Pons, Lord of Baudinard (1206 - 1236), appeared. The castrum of Beldisnar is also mentioned in 1232, 1244 and 1252 in the "enquiry into the rights and revenues of Count Charles 1st of Anjou in Provence".
The construction or reconstruction of the castle can be attributed to Guillaume de Baudinard, born in 1261, or to his son Jean.
On 13 May 1389, Baucette de Blacas-Baudinard married Elzéar de Sabran-Ansouis, from whom the new line of Sabran-Baudinard lords descended.
