Vue depuis la chapelle - Chapelle Notre-Dame de Liesse

Notre-Dame-de-Liesse chapel

VERIGNON

The Notre-Dame-de-Liesse chapel is a votive chapel perched at an altitude of 991 m between the communes of Aups and Vérignon - It is not known when it was built.

Surrounded by pines and rocks, the chapel offers its right side to the peak of the rocky bar that plunges to the bottom of the coomb that separates it from the hill of Les Espiguières. Vertigo guaranteed.

History (or legend) has it that it was built in the Middle Ages. The region was once a lordship of the Blacas. A lady from Aups, belonging to this rich family, used to climb to the top of the bar every day to watch for the return of her dear son who had gone on the Crusades and pray for his safe return. Thus she vowed to build a chapel there if her son ever returned from the Holy Land. And when his son finally returned, the whole region rejoiced, and it was in this general jubilation that the chapel was built.
