Vue d'ensemble - Grande fontaine

Great fountain

BAUDUEN

Wash-house from the 19th century.

date on which, a municipal by-law forbids to wash the linen there not to contaminate the water. At that time, it was the only fountain in the village and its use was reserved for feeding people and animals. It was only in 1765 that the basin for washing clothes was built.
In the seventeenth century, for twelve years, the fountain of Bauduen was the subject of a dispute between the community of inhabitants and the lord of Pontevès, owner of the adjoining castle, who was accused of diverting the water from this fountain upstream to water his garden. At the end of several trials and expert opinions, the lord submitted to the sentence handed down by the "experts" and undertook not to disturb the inhabitants "in the enjoyment of the waters of the fountain... Such trials are frequent in the region, they attest to the importance of water within the villages". (PNRV)
